Obituary for William "Bill" Murphy
William "Bill" Murphy, 56, a National Press Club member since 2013 and CFO of Stars and Stripes, died Feb. 3 at his home in Dumfries, Va. Although he worked on the business side of the publication, Stars and Stripes's publisher, Max Lederer, said Murphy's career had been with news organizations and that he was a strong advocate for freedom of the press and a proud member of the Club. He often enjoyed lunch at the Club's Reliable Source restaurant.

Kenelm "Ken" W. Coons, a six-year National Press Club member, died Feb. 3 in Annapolis, Md., where he had lived for the last 14 years. He was 85. Coons ended his career as associate editor of SeafoodNews.com, a major source for news about the North American seafood industry for which he was a well-known expert and advocate. From 1980 to 2000 he was executive director of the New England Fisheries Development Association (NEFDA). Coons was born in Boston and graduated from Harvard College in 1953. Julia Cooper Schoo, whose keen appreciation for art and journalism helped to secure the financial future of the National Press Club and its nonprofit Journalism Institute, died Wednesday at her home in Bethesda. She was 69. Schoo spent her professional career helping journalists, first at the Washington Press Club and then at the National Press Club, where she rose through the ranks to become executive director of the Journalism Institute, the Club’s professional training and First Amendment advocacy arm. Club member and veteran journalist Connie Lawn passes away at age 73
Long-time independent reporter and National Press Club member Connie Lawn died Monday at her Lake Barcroft home in Falls Church, Virginia, at age 73. Her death from a rare form of Parkinson disease was confirmed by her husband, Dr. Charles Sneiderman. She spent 50 years covering the White House, the longest-serving reporter there. She came to Washington in l967 after graduating from Simmons College in Boston and studying at Harvard and L’Institut Science Politique in Paris. Federico Klein, a communicator member of the National Press Club since 2011, died March 21. He was 78. A native of Argentina, he was a graduate of the University of Buenos Aires and earned a degree from George Washington University after joining the Inter-American Development Bank in 1968 where he worked on economic development in Latin America. Judge Lawrence S. Margolis, a recent NPC member and husband of long-time NPC member Doris Margolis, died Jan. 18 of a heart ailment. A resident of Washington, D.C., he retired after more than 31 years as a judge on the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. He was born in Philadelphia in 1935 and joined the NPC in November 2016. Margolis served as a U.S. Magistrate for D.C. from 1971 until 1981, when President Ronald Reagan appointed him to the Court of Federal Claims. Sofia Mannos, an international print and broadcast journalist and a National Press Club member from 2009 to 2015, died Nov. 29 in Pfaffikon, Switzerland. She was 70. Mannos suffered a fall in her apartment near DuPont Circle two years ago in which she was initially paralyzed and remained severely handicapped despite intense therapy. James M. Perry, 1997 winner of the National Press Club's Fourth Estate Award, died Nov. 23 of heart disease. He was 89. Perry, who lived in Chevy Chase, Md., was chief political correspondent for the Wall Street Journal when he was recognized by the Club for his distinguished career in journalism and became a Club member. He continued to write commentary and books after retiring from daily journalism in 1997. Howard M. Tucker, a Silver Owl National Press Club member and participant in many Club social and charitable activities, died Nov. 17 from complications of pneumonia. He was 86. A native of Washington, Howard joined the NPC in 1985 and helped organize charity fund-raising "cigar nights" before smoking was banned in the Club in 2007.
