Female correspondents in the combat zone, Oct. 11

Two celebrated women authors will share the harrowing and untold stories of the challenges endured by fearless female war correspondents and what they experienced in the field   and on the home front during the Vietnam War at what promises to be a compelling program sponsored by the National Press Club’s History and Heritage Team at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11.

The event is free for Club members who sign in to the Club’s website, and $15 for nonmembers. Reservations can be made online.

Lorissa Rinehart, author of “First to the Front, The Untold Story of Dickey Chapelle, Trailblazing Female War Correspondent,” uncovers the incredible story of Dickey Chappelle, who endured harrowing challenges on and off the fields of war ultimately to became the first female journalist killed in combat. This caused more barriers for women to cover war zones.  

Elizabeth Becker, award-winning author of “You Don’t Belong Here: How Three Women Rewrote the Story of War,” and a war correspondent herself, shines a light on the truth of war through the eyes of three unique and gifted war reporters Kate Webb,  Catherine Leroy and Frances Fitzgerald, and the dramas they endured. 

The event will be moderated by team member Claire Swift, broadcast journalist, executive chairman of the American News Women’s Club and associate editor of American Heritage magazine.
