Celebrate a night of journalistic excellence Aug. 30 at the Club

The National Press Club will celebrate excellence in journalism at its annual awards dinner on Aug. 30 at a time when that work is more important than ever.

The awards dinner recognizes the winners of the Club's annual journalism contest. The award winners at the 45th Annual Journalism Awards Dinner include categories such as breaking news, regional reporting, online journalism and humor.

The event starts at 6 p.m. on Aug. 30 with a reception in the Holeman Lounge, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. in the ballroom. Tickets can be purchased online.

Ttere will be an after party in the Reliable Source after dinner.

The Wall Street Journal, CQ Roll Call, Reuters and KDVR of Denver were among the first-place winners.

The Journal won the breaking news prize for its coverage of the Amazon/Whole Foods merger. Kate Ackley of CQ Roll Call won the Lee Walczak Award for Political Analysis and John Donnelly, also of CQ Roll Call, won the Michael A. Dornheim Award.

A team of reporters from Kaiser Health News won the Joan M. Friedenberg Online Journalism Award. A team from Reuters won the consumer news-newspaper prize for a thorough look at levels of lead contamination in water. KDVR won consumer journalism-broadcast for a look at explosives used by the government to kill coyotes _ a dangerous practice, and won an Ann Cottrell Free Award for stories on unregulated horse racing in Colorado
