CDC Director to discuss U.S. and global health threats Sept. 10

Tom Frieden, M.D., director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will update his audience about major health issues and challenges at a Tuesday, September 10 National Press Club luncheon. The title of his talk will be “The Cough Heard ‘Round the World: CDC and Health Security.” He will discuss new and deadly pathogens that can “hitch-hike rides and crisscross the globe in a day,” creating a growing global threat.

The CDC, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is charged with protecting public health and safety via the control and prevention of disease, injury, and disability. It focuses on infectious disease, food-borne pathogens, environmental health, occupational safety, and health education and promotion. The CDC also researches and provides information on non-infectious diseases, such as diabetes and obesity.

The luncheon will take place in the National Press Club ballroom and will start promptly at 12:30. Dr. Frieden’s remarks will start at 1:00, followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $21 for Press Club members, and $21 for one guest. Cost for other tickets is $35 each.
