Award-winning photojournalist to discuss challenges in Myanmar Sept.11

Award-winning photojournalist Thomas Cheatham will discuss "Myanmar Today and the Challenges Ahead," at a special event presented by the Club's International Correspondents and Photography Committees on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the Holeman Lounge. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is sponsoring Cheatham's presentation and slideshow.

Cheatham has visited Myanmar eight times since 2006, documenting the old and new. Most recently, he photographed the work of the UNDP there. He will explore the changes in Myanmar, life in the countryside, and what non-governmental organizations like the UNDP are doing to improve people's lives. Cheatham's goal is to dignify the lives of people in Myanmar who have struggled for so long, and continue to struggle.

Cheatham has many years of experience in print, broadcast, and photojournalism. His careers at UPI, NBC News, and The Christian Science Monitor Television have spanned decades and taken him from Vietnam to the Middle East, South Africa, Northern Ireland and beyond as a reporter and producer. His assignments have included wars, conflicts, and turmoil on every continent but Australia and Antarctica.

All National Press Club members and their guests are invited to attend. Registration is required here. The event is free for Club members by typing "Cheatham" in the promotional code box. Tickets are $10 for non-members. The event will feature a cash bar.
