Judiciary Ranking Democrat and Dean of Congressional Black Caucus to Address Issues of Guns, Health Care, Afghanistan, Jobs and Workers’ Rights
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Michigan), ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, will speak and take questions at a National Press Club Newsmaker at 10 a.m. Monday, March 14, in the National Press Building, 529 14th St. NW, 13th floor. Conyers is expected to address congressional inaction on guns, and also discuss health care, Afghanistan, jobs, workers’ rights and what he views as the U.S. Supreme Court’s threat to voting rights.
Conyers, dean of the Congressional Black Caucus, is the second-longest serving member of the House. He co-authored the single-payer health bill and was a key strategist in obtaining the votes for the Affordable Health Care Act. He is chairman of the Out of Afghanistan Caucus, former chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and the Government Operations Committee, and author of the Martin Luther King Holiday law. In 1994, the late Jack Anderson, renowned for investigative reporting, wrote a column on Conyers entitled, “John Conyers: Persistence and Power.”
