Press Freedom Book Rap: Lindsey Hilsum on war correspondent Marie Colvin

British journalist Lindsey Hilsum met Marie Colvin in 1998 while they both were on assignment in Djibouti. Their instant bond lasted until the end when Colvin was killed by an IED in Homs, Syria, in 2012. Everyone knew of Colvin’s tough demeanor and unflappable courage reporting from the world’s most treacherous war zones, but after Colvin’s death, Hilsum realized that there was much she did not know about her friend and colleague. Hilsum’s new book, In Extremis: The Life and Death of the War Correspondent Marie Colvin, is a thrilling and powerful investigation into Colvin’s epic life and tragic death.

NPC's Press Freedom committee, in partnership with the International Women's Media Foundation, will host a conversation with Lindsay Hilsum, moderated by NPCJI board president Barbara Cochran, on Monday, Dec. 3 in the Club's Bloomberg Room from 9.30am to 11am. Tickets are required; NPC members can purchase tickets for $5, the general public can purchase tickets for $10. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Lindsey Hilsum is the international editor for Channel 4 News in Britain. She has covered many of the major conflicts and international events of the past twenty-five years, including the wars in Syria, Ukraine, Iraq, and Kosovo; the Arab Spring; and the genocide in Rwanda. Her writing has appeared in The New York Review of Books, The Guardian, and Granta. Her first book, Sandstorm: Libya in the Time of Revolution, was short-listed for the 2012 Guardian First Book Award.
