The Freelance Workshop returns June 10
The Freelance Committee will reprise its annual workshop event on June 10 in the conference rooms. The two-part presentation will focus on writing for trade publications and monetizing social media efforts. The first panel will start at 1 p.m., followed by a second panel at 3 p.m. The event ends at 4:30 p.m. Tam Harbert, independent journalist and former chair of the Freelance Committee, will moderate the first panel. Club Treasurer: Best April ever
While the year started out slow for revenue, this April was the best April the National Press Club has ever had according to Treasurer Andrea Snyder. During a general membership meeting on Friday, May 20, Snyder presented the Club's financial state and outlook. She noted revenues slowed in the first quarter largely due to exceptionally bad winter weather that led many patrons to cancel or reschedule events. But that is all changing. "In April we had the best April the Press Club has ever had," said Snyder adding the Club received $1.4 million in revenues that month while expenses were down.…

NTSB Chair Christopher Hart to discuss plane, train, Metro accidents at June 30 luncheon
National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Christopher Hart will address the recent train, plane and Metro accidents at a National Press Club luncheon June 30. Hart has served as NTSB Chairman since April 2014. Before joining NTSB, Hart was a deputy director for air traffic safety oversight at the Federal Aviation Administration. W. Va. AG Patrick Morrisey: EPA oversteps on coal, clean energy
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey joined energy industry representatives at a May 23 Newsmaker to rally against against what Morrisey characterized as EPA overreach on clean energy. Morrisey charged the Environmental Protection Agency with acting as a central planning authority by overstepping it boundaries and attempting to regulate beyond its scope. Our speaker, Phil West, is a wildlife photographer and safari guide based in Kenya and spent most of his childhood in Tsavo National Park. Herman Joseph Obermayer, longtime member, supporter of the library, and publisher of the No. Va. Sun
Herman Joseph Obermayer, a longtime member of the National Press Club and publisher of the Northern Virginia Sun before selling it to the Gazette newspapers, died at his home in Arlington. He was 91. Obermayer was a contributor to the Eric Friedheim library expansion, among his other charitable good works. Radio has always been FUN for Club member Camille Bohannon
National Press Club Broadcast Committee member Camille Bohannon lived in eight countries before she was 18-years-old and mastered four languages. When it came time for college, she landed in Las Vegas, N.M., (near Santa Fe), where she worked at the local cable TV operation and radio station KFUN. In a community steeped in Hispanic heritage, those call letters equaled "Que-FUN" which translated to "What Fun!" and, that's what Camille thought about broadcasting. What fun!
