The National Press Club’s plans to present awards for excellence in news and feature photography. The contest will recognize excellence for an individual news photo and for a feature photo. The contest is limited to photos taken during 2016. The winner in each category will win one free membership in the Press Club for a year. Breaking news is one of the most important assignments journalists have, and the National Press Club wants to recognize the very best work in both broadcast and for print/online stories from 2016 so send us your best breaking news stories -- both for broadcast and for print -- for the 2017 Press Club journalism contest. Supreme Court Term Review
The Washington Legal Foundation sponsored a forum at the National Press Club to evaluate the decisions of the Supreme Court during its recently completed term. Issues involved in the decisions of the Supreme Court included allowing regulations to stand which prohibited doctors in federally funded clinics from mentioning abortion as an alternative for pregnant women, limitations in the number of appeals available to death row inmates, and allowing victim impact testimony in sentencing hearings. Snippet #12: Songwriters: The National Press Club had a song in its heart in 1924 when it hosted a "songwriters" night" to celebrate the 10th birthday of ASCAP--the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Irving Berlin was there, as were Jerome Kern, John Phillip Sousa, Victor Herbert and young George Gershwin. Berlin confessed that although he could write unforgettable songs, he could only play them on the piano's black keys.
