"Card Carriers: Virtually every president of the United States has been an associate or honorary member of the National Press Club since its founding in 1908. But only one president was professionally qualified to be an active member. He was Warren Harding, former publisher of The Marion Star newspaper in Ohio. While in the White House, Harding voted in Club elections, attended Club events and played poker with reporters on at least one occasion. Workshop on using Congress.gov offered Feb. 16
There are only a few days left to sign up for a workshop on using the resources on Congress.gov, hosted by the National Press Club's Journalism Institute and Professional Development Committee, on Feb. 16 at 9:30 a.m. in the Club's Bloomberg Room. Obituary for William "Bill" Murphy
William "Bill" Murphy, 56, a National Press Club member since 2013 and CFO of Stars and Stripes, died Feb. 3 at his home in Dumfries, Va. Although he worked on the business side of the publication, Stars and Stripes's publisher, Max Lederer, said Murphy's career had been with news organizations and that he was a strong advocate for freedom of the press and a proud member of the Club. He often enjoyed lunch at the Club's Reliable Source restaurant.

Obituary for Kenelm "Ken" W. Coons
Kenelm "Ken" W. Coons, a six-year National Press Club member, died Feb. 3 in Annapolis, Md., where he had lived for the last 14 years. He was 85. Coons ended his career as associate editor of SeafoodNews.com, a major source for news about the North American seafood industry for which he was a well-known expert and advocate. From 1980 to 2000 he was executive director of the New England Fisheries Development Association (NEFDA). Coons was born in Boston and graduated from Harvard College in 1953. He served two years stationed in West Germany as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.…

Simeon Booker, 1982 Fourth Estate Awardee, nominated for Congressional Gold Medal
Representative Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, and 16 other Representatives have co-sponsored a bill to give National Press Club life member Simeon Booker a Congressional Gold Medal “in recognition of his achievements in the field of journalism, including reporting during the Civil Rights movement, as well as social and political commentary.” Born in 1918, Booker joined the Club in 1956, the second African-American member, and was the 1982 Fourth Estate Award winner.
