Merriman Smith and UPI’s Glory Days
In the 1960s UPI and AP fought head to head for every second of every story. No one epitomized that competition more than Merriman Smith, who served as UPI’s White House correspondent from the Franklin Roosevelt administration through Richard Nixon. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of John Kennedy’s assassination. He and the AP correspondent fought over the telephone in the press pool car just four car’s back from the presidential limousine. U.S. Journalism Crisis
Mr. Panetta delivered the luncheon speech at a forum on the state of U.S. journalism. He spoke about the challenges facing the media and ways to address them from his perspective as a newsmaker rather than a journalist. He examined the parallel public cynicism and skepticism toward elected officials and members of the press, as well as the evolution of this problem and what can be done about it, especially in relations between the press and elected officials. After his prepared remarks, he took questions from the audience.

Renowned cookbook author, Dorie Greenspan (“At My French Table,”” Baking Chez Moi”) is publishing her new cookie-centric cookbook, “Dorie’s Cookies,” the last week of October. The Fourth Estate is throwing a launch party/wine dinner on Friday, October 28, 2016, with hors d’oeuvres starting at 6:30 and dinner at 7:00pm.
