American Legion Post 20 Meeting April 9 to Honor Vietnam Veterans and Legendary Vietnam Journalist
Vietnam veterans will be honored at the April 9 luncheon meeting of American Legion Post 20, which is affiliated with the National Press Club. The meeting will take place at noon in the McClendon Room. The guest speaker will be Major General Edward J. Chrystal, Jr., director of the United States Vietnam War Commemoration. MG Chrystal will have pins for Vietnam veterans. In addition, Post 20 2nd Vice Commander Kevin Wensing will present a framed tribute honoring legendary reporter Joe Galloway, who was posthumously awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal recently by President Biden. The Reliable Source at the National Press Club plans to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a buffet on Thursday, March 20 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The buffet is $40 for members and $50 for guests plus drinks, tax and gratuity. We’re Just Wild About Harry One of the highlights of the National Press Club’s illustrious history is the day in February, 1945 when then-Vice President Harry Truman played the piano to entertain hundreds of servicemen gathered in the ballroom for the weekly World War II Canteen. Also attracted to the Canteen was the 20-year-old film starlet, Lauren Bacall, who had just exploded in popularity. Seeing a chance for publicity, her agent boosted her on top of the upright piano as she draped her legs while Truman played. That became the most famous photo taken at the Club. To commemorate that…

American History museum shares objects with hidden stories to take Post 20 on a journey through political history
A curator with the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History told American Legion Post 20 members on Wednesday, "Objects have hidden stories in them." Dr. Claire Jerry, curator of the museum's Division of Political History, discussed efforts to document political history, and to help the public share and understand that history. Jerry described how the political history division has 170,000 objects, some of which predate the Smithsonian itself, founded in 1846. The Press Club's Member-Author Team plans to hold its first social on Friday, March 21, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the Reliable Source’s Cosgrove Lounge.
