Photo Team to hear photographer and activist Nancy Shia
D.C. community photographer and activist Nancy Shia will talk about her acclaimed Out My Window photo collection at the next National Press Club Photography Team meeting on Thursday, July 15 at 11:30 am in the Cosgrove Lounge. The Out My Window collection chronicles Shia's 40 years living in D.C. at Ontario Road and Columbia Road NW, and the changes taking place in the Adams Morgan and surrounding neighborhoods over that time. Join us on Friday, September 17 as we celebrate Mexican Independence Day with tequila tastings and education. Florina Martinez, the U.S. Representative of the Tequila Regulatory Council will lead a quick educational session about the Tequila Appellation of Origin that will include information about the role of CRT, the territory of production, categories and classes of tequila and some tasting notes. Gloria Browne-Marshall plans to present her latest book, The African American Woman, 400 Years of Perseverance at a National Press Club Book Rap on Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Cosgrove Lounge. Event Description: The National Press Club, Events Committee, is featuring the documentary The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords, by award-winning director Stanley Nelson. The film debuted on PBS during Black History Month 1999 and was featured by NPR during the March On Washington 50th Anniversary recognition. National Press Club's Photography Team presents Club member and documentary photographer Ben Sarao, who made photos of children with birth defects traced to dioxin poisoning in rural Illinois in 1972 and Vietnam in 2019. Sarao compiled the photos in a new book, Shared Tragedy, that he will describe for participants. Joining Sarao to discuss this work is Pulitzer Prize winning science journalist Deborah Blum, director of the Knight Science Journalism program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. WJLA General Assignment Reporter Sam Ford will join us virtually for a special Broadcast-Podcast Team meeting from 12-1PM on Thursday, May 5. Sam has been with WJLA-TV for 30 years. He has been a broadcaster for 45 years, starting with radio stations in Kansas and Minnesota before moving on to television. Previously, Sam spent nine years as a correspondent for CBS News.
