The murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020, set off a series of protests in the United States and around the world, awakening millions to widespread abuses by the nation’s police forces.

Samuels and co-author Toluse "Tolu" Olorunnipa, Washington Post political enterprise and investigations reporter, drew on more than 400 interviews, with the friends and family who knew Floyd best, and those who were with him when he died. A review in The New York Times described the book as "a brilliantly revealing portrait of the structures of poverty, land theft and racism that shaped not only Floyd but also his kinship networks in the South."

The program includes a question-and-answer session. To submit a question in advance for the speaker, put GEORGEFLOYD in the subject line and email to [email protected].

Jones, whose Washington-based charitable organization helps low-income residents with food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services to reduce the burden of poverty, will bring a local focus to the themes in the book.
