Elbegdorj's remarkable political career began in 1990 when he co-drafted Mongolia's first democratic constitution. Two years later, under his leadership, Mongolia declared itself a nuclear weapons-free zone. Throughout his presidency, from 2009 to 2017, Elbegdorj was a prominent voice in regional and global forums promoting nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.

In addition to his national contributions, Elbegdorj is a respected member of the prestigious Club de Madrid and The Elders, where he continues to influence global discourse on leadership and human rights. He served as Prime Minister twice, first in 1998 and again from 2004 to 2006. During his presidency, Elbegdorj launched several key initiatives, including the Asian Partnership for Democracy in 2011, which focused on promoting civil society and advocating for women's political rights.
