Today: Conversations with Correspondents features Politico’s Christopher Miller, Ukrainian journalist Tanya Kozyreva
Christopher Miller, world and national security reporter at Politico who has lived for more than 12 years in Ukraine and Eastern Europe, and Tanya Kozyreva, a Ukrainian journalist who has been a Pulitzer-Prize nominee and is an incoming Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, plan to discuss what it’s like to cover Russia’s war on Ukraine from the frontlines during a National Press Club virtual event at noon today, Tuesday, June 21.
Miller joined Politico in April after several years with BuzzFeed News covering the frontline of the war in the Donbas region of Ukraine that began with Russia’s 2014 invasion and escalated with the full-scale assault launched in February. He previously was a correspondent for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, based in Kyiv, and also has worked for Mashable. Miller has been published in Britain’s The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Times, and The Independent, as well as Politico Europe, Vice News and CNN. From 2013-14, he was a news editor and reporter on the Kyiv Post team that won the 2014 Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism for coverage of events in Ukraine that year.
Miller is the author of the forthcoming book The War Came to Us, which is about Ukraine's tumultuous recent history through peacetime, revolution and war. He draws "intimate portraits of people & events shaping the nation & forging a new Ukrainian identity," said publisher Bloomsbury Books.
Kozyreva is an investigative reporter based in Kyiv. She was a 2021 Pulitzer finalist as part of the team that produced the FinCEN Files series from BuzzFeed News and the International Consortium of Journalists (ICIJ) that exposed corruption in the global banking industry.
Kozyreva was a BuzzFeed News correspondent based in Kyiv and has written and reported for ICIJ, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, The Telegraph, and other publications. Kozyreva authored a guest essay in the New York Times in May entitled, “I Spent Weeks on Ukraine’s Front Lines. Everything Has Changed.”
She recently became one of 24 journalists from around the world to be named a Nieman Fellow for a year of study at Harvard University starting in the fall. She said she plan to study U.S. regulatory shortfalls that allow criminals to use cryptocurrencies to conceal and launder billions of dollars, as well as the impact of these crimes on working people in the U.S. and overseas.
The one-hour discussion with Miller and Kozyreva, hosted by the Club’s International Correspondents Team, is expected to be moderated by Club President Jen Judson. Judson is the land warfare reporter for Defense News and has covered defense in the Washington area for more than a decade, previously for Politico and Inside Defense.
