Christopher Miller, world and national security reporter at Politico who has lived for more than 12 years in Ukraine and Eastern Europe, and Tanya Kozyreva, a Ukrainian journalist who has been a Pulitzer Prize nominee and is an incoming Nieman Fellow at Harvard, discuss what it’s like to cover Russia’s war on Ukraine from the frontlines, in a virtual event on Tuesday, June 21, at 12 p.m.

Miller joined Politico in April after several years with BuzzFeed News covering the frontline of the war in Donbas that began with Russia’s 2014 invasion as well as the full-scale assault that began in February of this year. He previously was a correspondent for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, based in Kyiv, and also has worked for Mashable and been published in Britain’s The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Times, and The Independent, as well as POLITICO Europe, Vice News, and CNN. From 2013 to 2014, he was a news editor and reporter on the Kyiv Post team that won the 2014 Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism for coverage of events in Ukraine that year.

He is the author of the forthcoming book The War Came to Us, about Ukraine's tumultuous recent history through peacetime, revolution and war, "drawing intimate portraits of people & events shaping the nation & forging a new Ukrainian identity." It is to be published by Bloomsbury Books.

Kozyreva is an investigative reporter based in Kyiv. She was a 2021 Pulitzer finalist as part of the team that produced the FinCEN Files series from BuzzFeed News and the International Consortium of Journalists (ICIJ), exposing corruption in the global banking industry. She was a BuzzFeed News correspondent based in Kyiv and has written and reported for ICIJ, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, The Telegraph, and others. Kozyreva authored a guest essay in the New York Times in May entitled, “I Spent Weeks on Ukraine’s Front Lines. Everything Has Changed.”

She recently became one of 24 journalists from around the world to be named a Nieman Fellow for a year of study at Harvard University starting in the fall. She will study “U.S. regulatory shortfalls that allow criminals to use cryptocurrencies to conceal and launder billions of dollars, as well as the impact of these crimes on working people in the U.S. and overseas.”

The one-hour discussion with Miller and Kozyreva, hosted by the club’s International Correspondents team, will be moderated by National Press Club President Jen Judson. She is the land warfare reporter for Defense News and has covered defense in the Washington area for more than a decade, previously for Politico and Inside Defense.

Registered participants will receive a unique link to access the webinar in their confirmation after completing registration. Submit your questions for Miller and Kozyreva during the event using the Q&A box within the webinar.
