Actor Michael York to discuss his rare disease at Aug. 12 Luncheon
Award winning actor Michael York will describe the challenges he faces with the rare disease of amyloidosis and how he became a spokesperson for this little known ailment at an Aug. 12 National Press Club luncheon. Two documentaries to celebrate journalism at AFI festival
The American Film Institute’s annual film festival, AFI DOCS, features two journalism-related documentaries. “The Man Who Saw Too Much,” is about Mexican photojournalist Enrique Metinides’ 50 years of chronicling crime scenes. “Obit,” takes you behind the scenes of The New York Times obituary desk. The National Press Club's American Legion Post 20 marked D-Day with a special tribute to long-time Club and Post member John Metelsky and a report on the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial targeted for opening on D-Day 2019. Club President Thomas Burr greeted guest speakers and congratulated the Post 20 on being selected the "Outstanding Post" in the District of Columbia for 2015-2016 at the annual convention of the D.C. National Press Club Mourns Loss of National Public Radio Employees in Afghanistan
In the wake of the deaths Sunday in Afghanistan of a National Public Radio photographer and his translator, the National Press Club offered condolences to NPR staffers and the families of those killed. The photographer, David Gilkey, and his Afghan translator, Zabihullah Tamanna, were killed on assignment in southern Afghanistan. They were traveling with an Afghan army unit when the convoy came under fire, NPR said. Their vehicle was struck by shell fire, and the two perished. Broadcast Committee member Steve Taylor shares Reagan anecdotes
Club member Steve Taylor told the June meeting of the Broadcast Committee that his journalism career aligns neatly with the political career of honorary Club member Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States. Taylor was broadcasting results of the federal mid-term elections for college radio station WUVA, aided by a lone UPI printer outside the studio, in November of 1966 when Reagan was elected governor of California.
