NPC group gets close look at escape route of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth
Some 35 NPC members and guests got a close-up look at the escape route into Maryland of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth on the Club's annual Civil War trip on Saturday, July 23. Led by expert guide Dave Taylor, the group departed DC with a drive-by of the home of convicted conspirator Mary Surratt at 604 H St. NW, now a Chinese restaurant. Taylor was attired in the same black wool outfit worn by Booth, an acclaimed stage actor, when he shot Lincoln at Ford's Theatre the night of April 14, 1865. National Press Club alarmed by Turkey's purge of journalists
The National Press Club on Tuesday voiced alarm that the Turkish government was moving to arrest dozens of journalists following the recent attempted military coup. Official Turkish news agencies report that detention warrants have been issued for 42 journalists, with five journalists already detained for questioning. A number of news outlets have also been shuttered in the days since the failed coup that sought to topple President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. War correspondent Kim Barker to speak at 'Whiskey Tango Foxtrot' screening July 29
The National Press Club's Young Members and International Correspondents Committees will host a screening of the film "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" on Friday, July 29, at 6:15 in the Holeman Lounge, followed by a panel discussion featuring journalist and author Kim Barker. Barker's real life experiences depicted in her book, "The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan," inspired the making of the film. The period for submitting entries for the 17th annual National Press Club Members' Photography Exhibit begins on Monday, Aug. 1, so now's the time to get your photos printed for display. Entries will be accepted in the Club's membership office on the 13th floor through Friday, Aug. 12. The exhibit is the Club's annual celebration of photographic talent, by pros and amateurs alike, within its membership ranks. It is not a contest; there are no judges nor prizes awarded. Ambassador Burney talked first about Pres. Bush's recent visit to Ottawa and his meetings with the Prime Minister of Canada. The two major outcomes of that meeting were an acid rain accord and agreement on the peace negotiations in the Middle East.
