Defense secretary luncheon postponed
Thursday's Luncheon with Secretary of Defense Ash Carter was postponed due to a conflict with the secretary’s schedule. A new date has not been set but efforts are underway to reschedule it for the fall. Members who bought tickets for the luncheon and want a refund should contact [email protected]. Otherwise, tickets will remain valid for the new date.

Freelancers invited to media law program Sept. 20
The National Press Club Journalism Institute and the Media Law Resource Center Institute will present a one-day workshop aimed at freelancers, bloggers and other independent journalists working without the benefit of a legal department. Media lawyers will address libel, privacy, newsgathering and the Freedom of Information Act, and copyright and digital law. Panel to look at secret money in political campaigns

New Wildlife Policy for Kenya
Dr. Leakey talked about wildlife preservation. He said that prior to his appointment, certain animals, like the African elephant and the white rhinoceros, were being poached almost to the point of extinction. By killing and selling the ivory tusks of just one elephant, a poacher could earn the nation's average annual income. Under his direction, during an eight month period in 1990, 26 elephants were killed, compared to the same period two years earlier when more than 2,000 were killed. Memorial for former NPC president Art Wiese on Saturday
The National Press Club will honor former President Arthur E.F. Wiese Jr. at a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Wiese, who served as club president in 1979, also chaired the committee that redesigned the Club in the early 1980s when the National Press Building underwent a full renovation. Though Wiese had a full committee of members, he did almost all of the work himself, working with architects and designers. The appearance of the club today mostly reflects his efforts.
