Another nonprofit joins Sept. 29 talk on international reporting grant opportunities
A fourth organization has signed up to participate in a Sept. 29 National Press Club evening panel discussion on international reporting grants and how to win one. The Thursday Sept. 29 event goes from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in the NPC's Conference Rooms and is sponsored by the NPC's International Correspondents and Freelancer committees. NPC American Legion Post 20 plans 'Gen. Pershing' address on Wednesday, Oct. 5, noon
David Shuey, an actor and historian, plans to portray Gen. John J. Pershing at the National Press Club noon on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the NPC's McClendon Room at a luncheon meeting of NPC American Legion Post 20. All Press Club members are invited to watch Shuey's portrayal of the World War I general who, as a member of the Club, urged the establishment of Post 20 nearly 100 years ago. Taking Apartheid Apart: A Free South Africa
Mr. Hani is the highest ranking member of the African National Congress to visit America since Nelson Mandela's visit in June 1990. He is on a ten-day tour to visit members of Congress, State Department officials and anti-apartheid activists to gather support for the continued efforts to abolish apartheid in South Africa. Congress will be holding hearings on April 30 to assess the impact and the future of sanctions against South Africa as mandated by the Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986. Gary Vikan, who led Baltimore’s Walters Art Museum for nearly two decades, discusses his memoir, Sacred and Stolen: Confessions of a Museum Director, at a National Press Club Book Rap on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the NPC's Conference Rooms. Memorial service for former Club President Art Wiese on Saturday
Former President Arthur E.F. Wiese Jr. will be remembered Saturday at a memorial service at beginning at 11 a.m. Wiese served as club president in 1979. Wiese suffered a brain aneurysm in 2012, which left him disabled until his death on Apr. 21, 2016. He chaired the committee that oversaw the renovation of the Club in the early 1980s. Wiese came to Washington as a member of the bureau of the Houston Post. In 1973, at the age of 27, he was named bureau chief. When he served as president of the Press Club at 32, he was the youngest person ever to hold the post in its then 71-year history. In…
