MGM Resorts CEO to preview local casino at National Press Club, Dec. 2
James Murren, chairman and chief executive of MGM Resorts International, will speak at a National Press Club luncheon on Friday, Dec. 2. Murren will talk about MGM National Harbor, a $1.4 billion casino scheduled to open on Dec. 8, and offer his perspectives on the travel and tourism industry. Be a part of the beginning of a new writing group for explanatory journalism. The Wonky Writers Group meets at 8 p.m each Tuesday at the National Press Club on the 14th floor mezzanine. Explanatory journalism is nonfiction writing that is designed to tell you not just what is happening but why it is happening. Experts on African development, recently returned from tours of the famine ravaged countries Ethiopia, the Sudan and Somalia, reported on conditions in Africa at a news conference sponsored by the relief organization Bread for the World. They discussed the threat of starvation affecting millions in the horn of Africa, and recommended policies and methods to relieve the famine. National Press Club President Thomas Burr expressed concern Monday about reports that independent filmmakers have been arrested for documenting environmentalists’ protests of oil pipelines across four states. Filmmakers Deia Schlosberg and Lindsey Goodwin-Grayzel and cameraman Carl Davis, who were documenting protests, were arrested and charged with felonies, including conspiracy and burglary, according to news reports.
