Press Freedom book talk on war correspondent Marie Colvin to take place Monday
Lindsey Hilsum will talk about fellow journalist Marie Colvin at an event sponsored by the National Press Club's Freedom of the Press Committee at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3. Hilsum first met Colvin in 1998 while they both were on assignment in Djibouti. Their instant bond lasted until the end when Colvin was killed by an IED in Homs, Syria, in 2012. Everyone knew of Colvin’s reporting from the world’s most treacherous war zones, but after her death, Hilsum realized that there was much she did not know about her friend and colleague. Her new book, "In Extremis: The Life and Death of the War…

NPC in History: The tiny room with the big legacy
Down at the end of the corridor on the 14th floor – past the photos of former presidents, past the fitness center, past the work space for freelance writers – is a door with the words NPC Studio written in gold on a glass window. The door is usually locked, but inside is a small, soundproofed room hardly large enough for a couple of chairs. Before the National Press Club’s Broadcast Operations Center opened in 2006 on the fourth floor, this was a space that could be used to do television and radio interviews. Its small size and remote location belie the fact that it is the site of…

Olympic rower. Top editor of Buffalo’s underdog morning paper. And a fixture in Washington journalism who served on the National Press Club’s Board of Governors in the turbulent 1980s. Douglas L. Turner, longtime Washington bureau chief for The Buffalo News, fulfilled all those roles during his life – and was a lively, unforgettable presence in each of them. Turner, 86, died at his home in Springfield, Va., on Nov. 4 after a long illness. History repeats: NPC member Sergent recalls grandmother's unceremonious booting from the White House press corps circa 1972
As CNN challenges the White House over its banning of reporter Jim Acosta following his combative exchange with President Donald Trump, imagine a different scenario: What if Trump instead chose to ban Kate Bennett, the CNN reporter who covers the first lady? Forty-six years ago, that’s exactly what happened to my grandmother at The Washington Post. As the 1972 holiday season got underway, there was nothing too small President Richard Nixon wouldn’t try to hamstring the Post in the wake of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s Watergate reporting. This time, the target was Dorothy McCardle, who…
