The National Press Club's Reliable Source is planning the following events in January: Thursday, January 3: NPC Members Monthly Happy Hour 5-8 p.m. in the Truman Lounge Thursday, January 10: NPC Pub Quiz 7 p.m. in the Truman Lounge Thursday January 24: Jazz and Dinner with well-known musician Renée Tannenbaum, a professional jazz singer who regularly performs at Blues Alley, The Smithsonian, Cafe Lepic, Mr. Henry’s, and other clubs and restaurants around town. She just completed a tour in Europe where she performed in Prague and Rome.

NPC in History: Arafat’s moment of optimism
For years, Palestinian Liberation Organization President Yasser Arafat was denied a visa to come to Washington to accept the National Press Club’s invitation to speak at the Club. But that changed with the Oslo Peace Accords when Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin signed the historic agreement with President Bill Clinton in a White House South Lawn ceremony. Right-to-Die Movement
Dr. Jack Kevorkian, right-to-die advocate and author, discussed the movement he supports to allow the terminally ill to commit suicide prior to their total incapacitation. Dr. Kevorkian has aided the suicide of terminally ill patients, wrote a book on unassisted suicide methods, and built an apparatus that allows terminally ill patients to kill themselves with as little pain as possible.

Julie Moos, managing director of news at McClatchy, will be the executive director of the National Press Club Journalism Institute (NPCJI), the institute's board announced Dec. 7. Moos will begin work at NPCJI on Jan. 7. As managing director of news at McClatchy, Moos led coaching and training for reporters and editors in 30 newsrooms. The presidents of the National Press Club and its non-profit Journalism Institute wrote China’s ambassador to the United States on Dec. 10 calling for the release from prison of a U.S.-based photojournalist who was arrested more than a month ago in China.
