Club members witnessed Pearl Harbor, Pacific campaign firsthand
A future member of the National Press Club watched in stunned horror 75 years ago today as aircraft from the Japanese Imperial Navy fired bullets into his house on a Pearl Harbor hillside, sank or damaged much of the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet, and killed thousands of Americans. John Harllee, who was an associate member of the Club until his death in 2005 at the age of 91, helped avenge the toll of 2,403 killed and 1,178 wounded in the Sunday morning attack that launched U.S. participation in World War II by becoming a decorated combat veteran of PT boat forces. Sofia Mannos, 70, international print and broadcast journalist
Sofia Mannos, an international print and broadcast journalist and a National Press Club member from 2009 to 2015, died Nov. 29 in Pfaffikon, Switzerland. She was 70. Mannos suffered a fall in her apartment near DuPont Circle two years ago in which she was initially paralyzed and remained severely handicapped despite intense therapy. She was a long-time resident of Washington, D.C., who had also lived in Asheville, N.C., and in Paris and other cities in Europe. She was active in the Club's International Correspondents Committee and Broadcast Committee, where she helped prepare a weekly…

Today: Vote in the Club election
Vote today in the National Press Club election and then watch the results come in tonight in the Reliable Source. Polls for in-person voting at the Club opened at 8 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. The results will be tabulated and announced when counting is finished, perhaps as early as 7:30 p.m. Club officers and both journalist and communicator seats on the Board of Governors are on the ballot.

James Perry, 89, former Fourth Estate Award winner
James M. Perry, 1997 winner of the National Press Club's Fourth Estate Award, died Nov. 23 of heart disease. He was 89. Perry, who lived in Chevy Chase, Md., was chief political correspondent for the Wall Street Journal when he was recognized by the Club for his distinguished career in journalism and became a Club member. He continued to write commentary and books after retiring from daily journalism in 1997. Perry gained national prominence as a correspondent for the weekly National Observer, a Dow Jones publication from 1962 to 1977. Born in Elmira, N.Y., he worked for the Hartford (Conn.)…

National Press Club history snippet: Members of Indian political dynasty appear at Club
1979 National Press Club President Art Wiese was one of the Club's greatest leaders and most ardent supporters. He was responsible for planning much of the reconstruction of the Club during the building renovation in the early 1980s. For years, he was a watchdog to assure that the Club maintained its tradition as a safe harbor for journalists and communicators.
