Centennial of World War I sparks interest in the Great War, museum director says at Newsmaker
The World War I centennial has spurred a “deep vein of interest” in the United States, with visits to the National World War I Museum and Memorial up by 63 percent, Matthew Naylor, the Kansas City landmark’s president and chief executive, told a National Press Club Headliners Newmaker event on March 29. Club member and veteran journalist Connie Lawn passes away at age 73
Long-time independent reporter and National Press Club member Connie Lawn died Monday at her Lake Barcroft home in Falls Church, Virginia, at age 73. Her death from a rare form of Parkinson disease was confirmed by her husband, Dr. Charles Sneiderman. She spent 50 years covering the White House, the longest-serving reporter there. She came to Washington in l967 after graduating from Simmons College in Boston and studying at Harvard and L’Institut Science Politique in Paris. An introduction to the Library of Congress' bill-tracking site has been moved to April 19. The site, www.congress.gov, also provides access to the Congressional Record, committee reports, nominations, treaties, and executive communications. The National Press Club Journalism Institute and the Club's Professional Development Committee are offering a workshop on using the website at 9.30 a.m. April 19, in the Bloomberg Room. Board of Immigration Appeals accepts Press Club brief in support of Mexican journalist's asylum case
The Board of Immigration Appeals has agreed to allow the National Press Club and 16 other professional journalism organizations to intervene on behalf of a Mexican journalist who is seeking asylum in the United States. In a March 27 letter, the Board said it is accepting a 37-page “friend-of-the-court“ brief filed by the press groups in the asylum appeal case of Emilio Gutiérrez-Soto. The National Press Club Books and Brunch group will meet at noon on April 14 in the Fourth Estate Restaurant to discuss "Alex's Wake" by Martin Goldsmith. The work is a story of two parallel journeys undertaken several decades apart.
