The National Press Club, joined by 19 professional journalism organizations, on Monday asked a federal court to order the release of award-winning journalist Emilio Gutiérrez-Soto and his son, Oscar, from an El Paso detention center where Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have detained them for more than four months. “There is no basis, in law or basic human decency, for the treatment that Emilio and Oscar Gutiérrez-Soto have received at the hands of ICE,” the Club said in a friend-of-the-court brief filed before the U.S. district court in the Western District of Texas. “Emilio is…

National Press Club members can get professional head shots from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The cost is $25, and includes a breakfast of scrambled eggs, fruit, bagels and waffles and a mimosa. Deadline approaching for submitting the best journalism about animals and their welfare
The deadline is fast approaching for entering the Ann Cottrell Free Animal Reporting Award, which honors the best journalism on animals and their welfare each year. The extended deadline is April 16. The award is given as part of the National Press Club's journalism contests. The top work in 2017 in the broadcast and print/online categories will be honored with the award. Saturday's Book and Brunch event features tales of escape from Nazi Germany
The Books and Brunch Group will meet at noon on Saturday in the Fourth Estate Restaurant to discuss "Alex's Wake" by Martin Goldsmith. The work is a story of two parallel journeys that were undertaken several decades apart. In 1939 Goldsmith's grandfather, Alex, and his uncle, Helmut, were among the 937 passengers aboard the ship, St. Louis, fleeing Nazi Germany. The best political reporting and writing from 2017 should be entered in the National Press Club's journalism contest so it can be recognized by the Lee Walczak Award for Political Analysis. The deadline has been extended to Monday, April 16. This award is named in memory of Lee Walczak, a Washington editor, bureau chief and White House correspondent who worked for Bloomberg News and BusinessWeek.
