The National Press Club wants to recognize your best work in consumer journalism for 2016 in the Club’s annual journalism contest. These awards recognize excellence in reporting on consumer topics and judges will look more favorably on solution-oriented or strategic-oriented pieces that prompt action by consumers, the community, the government or an individual. Marshall Project seeks Washington reporter
The Marshall Project is adding a Washington-based reporter to its staff and is encouraging National Press Club members to apply. The Marshall Project is a nonprofit news organization with a mission to “create and sustain a sense of national urgency about the U.S. criminal justice system.” Successful candidates will have an interest in the criminal justice system and be experienced working with public records requests and with data. For those with a deft touch at writing humor, the National Press Club offers the Angele Gingras Humor Award. The award is named for a longtime National Press Club member who was good at writing about the funny side of the news. The award is given for a body of work from 2016. The National Press Club wants to see your best reporting on diplomatic and foreign affairs for 2016 in its annual journalism contest. The winning entry will get the Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence. The award is named for Hood, a distinguished diplomatic correspondent for The Associated Press and a founding member of the National Press Club. Mr. Russonello and Mr. Sanders briefed reporters on the results of a public opinion poll on public and private schools. The results of the poll indicated Americans generally believe their public schools are doing a good job in instructing their children. The poll showed, however, the majority of Americans feel private schools do a better job in instructing children than do public schools. Schmidt, the National Commander of The American Legion, the nation’s largest Veterans organization, will discuss ways that the Trump administration and Congress can improve the delivery of benefits to the country’s more than 20 million veterans at a National Press Club Newsmaker news conference, 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the Club’s Bloomberg Room. National Press Club members can buy tickets to the reprise of the Gridiron Club and Foundation's annual show to be held Sunday, March 5 in the Washington Renaissance Hotel, 999 Ninth Street NW. Obituary for Richard W. Bradee
Richard W. Bradee, a 35-year member of the National Press Club, who from 1969 until his retirement in 1992 was a one-man bureau for the Milwaukee Sentinel, died Jan. 26 in Cherry Hill, N.J. He was 85. Born in Waukesha, Wis., Bradee was a U.S. Army veteran who earned a communications degree from Marquette University. He worked for the Milwaukee Catholic Herald and the Madison Capitol Times before joining the Sentinel and starting its Madison bureau in 1962.
