Issues under examination by the three speakers and brought up in questions from the audience following the prepared remarks included the relationship between the central Soviet government and the Soviet states, the Soviet economy, the START arms control treaty which will be the center of the summit, and U.S. economic assistance for the Soviet Union.

The Lee Walczak Award for Political Analysis, part of the National Press Club's Journalism Contest, is accepting entries to recognize some of the top political reporting and writing for 2016.
