Louis Andrew (Drew) Von Bergen, a long-time Washington journalist and communications specialist and former president of the National Press Club, died on Monday, Dec. 18, of complications from congestive heart failure. He was 77 and lived in Alexandria, Va. In addition to heading the Club in 1980, Von Bergen also served as president of the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington from 1995 to 1997 and led a friendship trip to Japan with members of the Cherry Blossom Festival Board and key Festival participants in 1995. Following the brutal Dec. 19 assassination of another Mexican reporter, Gumaro Pérez Aguilando, the National Press Club and its nonprofit Journalism Institute are renewing their call for U.S. authorities to grant asylum and freedom to this year's NPC Press Freedom award-winner, Emilio Gutierrez Soto. Coast Guard head of public affairs to address NPC American Legion Post on Jan. 30
Rear Admiral Peter Gautier, Director of Governmental and Public Affairs for the U.S. Coast Guard, will be guest speaker at a luncheon meeting of National Press Club's American Legion Post 20 at 12 noon on Tuesday, Jan. 30, in the McClendon Room. Admiral Gautier is responsible for engagement with Congress, the media and intergovernmental entities. NPC board votes to rescind Charlie Rose's Fourth Estate Lifetime Achievement Award
The National Press Club Board of Governors voted unanimously at its Dec. 18 meeting to rescind its Fourth Estate Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Charlie Rose in 2014 and the accompanying honorary Club membership. Allegations about Rose’s conduct, acknowledged in part by him, led three news organizations to sever ties with him. Drew Von Bergen, a former UPI correspondent and president of the National Press Club in 1980, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, of heart failure. He was 77 and lived in Alexandria, Va. Drew joined the Club in 1971 while working as a UPI regional reporter in Washington, D.C. A memorial service is scheduled for Jan. 24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Club's Holeman Lounge. Former National Press Club President Myron Belkind retired after more than four decades as a bureau chief for The Associated Press.
