Wigle Whiskey Tasting celebrates year of 'good spirits' with Club President Ballou, Jan. 12
An event featuring a signature drink from his hometown of Pittsburgh will celebrate a year of 'good spirits' with outgoing Club President Jeffrey Ballou at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, in the Holeman Lounge. The Wigle Whiskey Tasting will run until 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available online. They can be purchased for a $15 early-bird rate until midnight, Jan. 7. The regular price is $20. Exploratory committee meets Jan. 18 to discuss Palisades Parade participation
An exploratory committee will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, in the Truman Lounge to discuss the National Press Club potentially participating in the July 4 Palisades Parade in D.C. The one-hour meeting will by the piano in the lounge. The Palisades Parade is D.C.'s premier Independence Day civic parade, running up MacArthur Blvd, N.W., from Whitehaven Parkway to the Palisades Recreation Center. First Friday Taco Night brings in 2018, Jan. 5
First Friday Taco Night is back at the National Press Club for 2018. If your New Year’s resolutions include “meet more people at the NPC,” we have the right way to kick it off. Taco Night runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Friday in the Reliable Source, including Jan. 5. Event honoring veterans, service dogs offers discount to Club members, Jan. 20
National Press Club members can buy discounted tickets to attend Side by Side, an evening of all-veteran entertainment, including standup comedy and live music, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Club. James W. Canan, a Golden Owl and member of Pulitzer-winning team, 88
James W. Canan, a Golden Owl National Press Club member who was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team at Gannett, died Dec. 23 after a long illness. He was 88. A native of New Castle, Pennsylvania, Canan graduated from Westminster College and served as an intelligence officer in Europe during the Korean War. He worked for the Armed Forces Security Agency and the National Security Agency before attending journalism graduate school at Northwestern University. He was a reporter for The Vindicator of Youngstown, Ohio, and the Binghamton Press before joining Gannett in Washington in 1960. He was…

Edney to assume presidency at General Membership Meeting, Jan. 19

Bureau of Immigration Appeals agrees to reconsider asylum request of jailed Mexican journalist
The U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals has agreed to reconsider National Press Club Press Freedom award-winner Emilio Gutierrez’s asylum petition following a campaign by Club members and allied professional journalism organizations to prevent the Mexican reporter from being deported to his home country, where he is under a death threat. The Club and its nonprofit Journalism Institute received word of the BIA decision this week; nonetheless, Gutierrez and his son, Oscar, remain in an El Paso immigration detention facility.
