Former Club presidents Burr, Hughes win top volunteer honors
Two former National Press Club presidents took the Club’s top volunteer awards at a Jan. 8 ceremony in the Holeman Lounge. Thomas Burr, a reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune and the 2016 Club president, won the Berny Krug Award, which recognizes the Club’s exceptional volunteer. John Hughes, a Bloomberg News editor, won the John Cosgrove Award, which is given to a former Club president who embodies the spirit and devotion to the Club of the late Cosgrove, an iconic Club presence who was the 1961 president. An event featuring a signature drink from his hometown of Pittsburgh will celebrate a year of 'good spirits' with outgoing Club President Jeffrey Ballou at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, in the Holeman Lounge. The National Press Club's effort to prevent the deportation of Mexican journalist Emilio Gutierrez has reached a “crucial phase,” Club executive director William McCarren said Thursday, as U.S. immigration officials reconsider his petition for asylum. Gutierrez and his son Oscar have been confined at an El Paso, Texas, detention facility since Dec. 7 after an attempt by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport them was halted by the Bureau of Immigration Appeals.
