National Press Building begins replacing staircase
Contractors have begun installing scaffolding and caution tape around the building atrium in the National Press Building as they prepare to demolish and replace the staircase next to Today's News leading from the lobby to the second floor. Press Club celebrates Milne's birthday with special Kids Night, visit from Winnie the Pooh
National Press Club members and their children enjoyed food, cake and an appearance by Winnie the Pooh at the Reliable Source to celebrate author A. A. Milne’s birthday on Jan. 18. The restaurant hosted a Kids Night honoring Pooh Bear with a buffet fit for the Hundred Acre Wood. Memorable Pooh and friends cartoons were displayed on the Reliable Source's two plasma screens. Alan Alexander Milne was born Jan. 18, 1882, in London. He died Jan. 31, 1956, in Sussex, England.

Longtime National Press Club member Debra Hughes passes away
Debra Hughes, a widely published medical writer and 39-year member of the National Press Club, died Sept. 2. She was 61 and lived in Lusby, Maryland. Hughes was a former editor of Oncology Times and was a writer and editor on a wide variety of cancer subjects for more than 30 years. She worked as a journalist, educator and publisher and in 1997 founded D.A. Hughes & Associates, a provider of medical communications services for academic institutions, medical associations and societies, publishing companies and pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms. Andrea Edney of Bloomberg News became the 111th National Press Club president Jan. 19 by accepting the gavel from Jeff Ballou of Al Jazeera, at the Club’s General Membership meeting.
