National Press Club's Update-1 podcast posts 100th edition
The National Press Club's podcast series has just posted its 100th edition. Started in October 2013, Update-1 has hosted numerous guests, not all of them strictly connected to the Club, but all of them of interest to members and to the general public. Volunteers from the Club record interviews. Hearing for detained Mexican journalist Emilio Gutierrez set for Feb. 26
An asylum hearing for detained Mexican journalist Emilio Gutierrez has been set for Feb. 26, although it could be pushed back to March. Gutierrez and his son Oscar have been confined at an El Paso, Texas, detention facility since Dec. 7 after an attempt by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport them was halted by the Bureau of Immigration Appeals. In December, the bureau agreed to review the case. Gutierrez's lawyer, Eduardo Beckett, is seeking an extension of the Feb. 26 hearing until the end of March because of other cases he has pending. Best writing in diplomatic, foreign policy issues to be honored in Club journalism contest
Your best reporting and writing on diplomatic and foreign affairs for 2017 is wanted for the National Press Club’s annual journalism contest. The winners in both print/online and broadcast will get the Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence. The award is named for Hood, a distinguished diplomatic correspondent for The Associated Press and a founding member of the Club. Entrants must demonstrate an understanding of American foreign policy and how foreign affairs affect those policies. Czech ambassador to speak at Club President Andrea Edney’s inauguration, Feb. 10
Hynek Kmoníček, the Czech Republic ambassador to the United States, will speak at the inauguration of National Press Club President Andrea Edney on Feb. 10. Edney, the 111th Club president, moved to the Czech Republic at age of 17 to study the language and then attended Karlova Univerzita, one of the world’s oldest universities. She began working as a reporter in Prague at the age of 19 and ultimately joined the Bloomberg News Prague bureau. She lived in the country for six years before moving to Slovakia. Mr. Rather addressed the Press Club on the condition of journalism and freedom of the press in the United States. Prior to Mr. Rather's speech, Mr. Kham was presented with the National Press Club's International Freedom of the Press award. Ms. Bauer accepted the National Freedom of the Press award. A special award went to Terry Anderson, an Associated Press journalist who was held hostage in Beruit for over six years. Mr. Anderson was not present.

The National Press Club journalism contest is accepting breaking news entries for broadcast and for print for the next couple of months. Breaking news is one of the most important assignments journalists have, and the Club wants to recognize the very best work in both broadcast and for print/online stories from 2017.
