Press Club softball team caps season with impressive playoff run
The National Press Club co-ed softball team entered the Metropolitan Media Softball League playoffs as the seventh seed after finishing the regular season with an 8-6 record. Then Big Blue caught fire. After splitting its first two games in the double-elimination tournament July 8-9, the Club softball team defeated three higher-seeded opponents to reach the finals of the losers' bracket against Comcast Sports Net. A victory would put the Club into the championship game. But it was not to be. After leading most of the way, the team gave up the lead to Comcast in the last of the sixth inning.…

Attention authors: Applications now being accepted for 40th annual NPC Book Fair
Applications are now being accepted for the National Press Club's 40th annual Book Fair, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 10. The deadline for requesting a space is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered All literary genres are considered, though self-published books and e-books are ineligible. The application fee of $75 for Club members and $150 for non-members is due and payable upon acceptance to the Book Fair. A panel of journalists and past and present government public relations officials will discuss ways of reducing the increasing hostilities between the press and the people they cover at a forum on Friday sponsored by the National Press Club Journalism Institute, the Club's nonprofit arm. Former head of government ethics office says norms have unraveled under Trump
Walter Shaub says he is using his post-government service to re-establish ethical norms that have unraveled. Shaub, who spoke at a National Press Club Headliners Newsmaker July 28, resigned from the Office of Government Ethics months before his five-year term expired, saying he had reached the limits of what he could accomplish at the agency. He is now serving as senior director of ethics at the Campaign Legal Center, an advocacy group. Former Census Bureau director says more funding is needed for count
On the heels of his unexpected resignation, former U.S. Census Bureau Director John Thompson called for adequate funding for the decennial count during a July 25 National Press Club Headliners Newsmaker. Preparations have been underfunded by $200 million so far, and the agency needs to be fully funded soon in order to catch up, he said. In particular, money is needed for a decentralized marketing campaign to ensure that everyone participates in the survey so that there is not an undercount, he said.
