A little more than two weeks ago, the National Press Club, at it often does, hosted a group of foreign journalists. Around the table in the Sarah McClendon room sat this year’s class of Vaclav Havel fellows, young journalists from countries that once belonged to the Soviet Union. Their fellowship is cosponsored by the Czech and U.S. governments, in an effort to encourage democracy by bolstering free speech. Professor Galbraith was an economics professor at Harvard University from 1934 to 1975, at times leaving academics to work in the federal government. He was an adviser to President John F. Kennedy, and served as ambassador to India in the early 1960s. He has also written a number of widely-read books on the economy and the modern state. Reporter manhandled by FCC guards because he asked question
Security guards at the Federal Communications Commission headquarters here manhandled a well-regarded reporter at a public hearing today and forced him to leave the premises after he had tried to politely ask questions of FCC commissioners. Toastmasters meet TONIGHT at 7 p.m.
If you want to polish your public persona or test your mettle with impromptu speaking, you’ll find like-minded people doing just that at the National Pres Club Toastmasters group. We meet on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. There is no charge to visit and no limit to the number of visits. Membership fees are about $130 per year.
