Panel to discuss visual journalism in era of fake news on Monday
Fake news extends well beyond the written word. On Monday, a panel led by the National Press Photographers Association will dissect the problem and discuss the importance of vetting images and maintaining visual integrity. The program, “Is Seeing Still Believing? Hats in the ring: Two future U.S. presidents first announced they would seek that office at the National Press Club. Democrat Jimmy Carter told an audience there in 1974 he planned to run in 1976. Then in 1975, Ronald Reagan announced at the Club that he would challenge President Gerald Ford for the Republican nomination, also in 1976. Toastmasters meets at Club on Monday
The next meeting of the Toastmasters Club is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday in the McClendon Room. The idea of the group is to improve public speaking skills, and in, so doing hear and tell some fascinating stories. Topics have included an unexpected friendship with Maya Angelou and the power of Greek gods. This is the fun stuff. Four Club members, Abby Livingston of the Texas Tribune, Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times, Shawna Thomas of Vice News and Sarah Wire of the Los Angeles Times, will be part of the journalists' team when they take on female members of Congress in the annual Congressional Women's Softball Game on Wednesday, June 21. NY Times correspondent to discuss Obama book June 29
Peter Baker, chief White House correspondent for the New York Times, plans to appear at a Headliner Book Rap on Thursday, June 29, to discuss his new book, Obama: The Call of History. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the conference rooms. The Book Rap will include a discussion with the author, a question-and-answer session from the audience and then a signing session Tickets are $5 for Club members and $10 for the general public. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to discuss "Moving Forward in Chicago," including new initiatives for education and other programs, at a Headliner Luncheon on Tuesday, June 20.
