Bill Senior, 54-year Club member, ex-Kiplinger exec, dies at 80
William "Bill" Senior, a 54-year member of the National Press Club and retired editorial manager at The Kiplinger Washington Editors, died June 7 at the age of 90 at his home in Ashburn, Va. He and his wife of 63 years, Lorraine, who died on May 9, had lived for many years in Reston, Va. Senior's 31-year career at Kiplinger began in 1970 when he joined the organization as editor of its agriculture letter. Club's annual Civil War battlefield trip heads to Brandy Station, Va., July 15
Brandy Station, near Culpeper, Va., site of the largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, will be the destination for the National Press Club’s 13th annual Civil War battlefield trip on Saturday, July 15. Club members and guests will depart by bus from the National Press Building at 8:30 a.m., returning at approximately 4:30 p.m. There is no charge for attendees, but Club members are asked to bring only one guest each. Books & Brunch to discuss ‘Germs, Guns and Steel” this Saturday, June 17
The National Press Club's Books & Brunch group will meet at noon this Saturday, June 17, in the Fourth Estate restaurant to discuss "Germs, Guns and Steel" by Jared Diamond. Diamond won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction for the book. The National Geographic Society produced and broadcast a PBS documentary based on the book in July 2005. In the book, Diamond argues that geography and environment determined which societies came to rely on farming and animal herding as their primary food source instead of hunting and gathering. On camera media training scheduled for June 16
National Press Club member Andrea McCarren, a veteran multimedia journalist and Emmy Award winner, will offer an on-camera media training class for journalists on Friday, June 16. The program will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Bloomberg Room. The hands-on workshop is for journalists who want to improve his or her presentation skills on camera or online. Soviet Agriculture
Secretary of Agriculture Edward Madigan discussed the state of Soviet agriculture in remarks delivered to the National Press Club. Earlier, in a joint news conference with Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, President Bush had announced the possibility of sending food aid to the Soviet Union in response to that nation's economic and agricultural problems.
