Battle of Midway veteran to address Club's American Legion Post 20, July 13
Retired Navy Captain Jack Crawford, a veteran of the famed World War II Battle of Midway, will be guest speaker at a luncheon meeting of the National Press Club's American Legion Post 20 at noon Thursday, July 13, in the McClendon Room. The 75th anniversary of the critical battle, in which four Japanese aircraft carriers were sunk, was observed on June 4. The battle is regarded as the turning point of the Pacific war. First Friday Taco Night on July 7 will feature a watermelon treat along our traditional free taco bar for members and guests. Seats are still available for the National Press Club’s annual Civil War battlefield trip on Saturday, July 15, to Brandy Station, Virginia. Efforts of the Constitutional Commission
Retired Chief Justice Burger addressed the National Press Club on the Bill of Rights, the constitutional separation of powers, the nomination of Justice Clarence Thomas, and the work of the Commission on the Constitution's Bicentennial, which he chairs. Justice Burger was nominated chief justice by President Richard Nixon, and sat on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1969 to 1986. He also acted as assistant attorney general under President Dwight Eisenhower. The former Supreme Court Justice responded to questions from the audience following his prepared remarks.

Fourth Estate closed for July 4 holiday weekend
The National Press Club will be closed Saturday, July 1, through Tuesday, July 4, in celebration of Independence Day. There will be no brunch or dinner service in the Fourth Estate on Saturday, July 1, or lunch service on Monday, July 3. The restaurant will re-open on Wednesday, July 5.

On Thursday, the Associated Press reported that Saudi Arabia is making the shutdown of the global news service al Jazeera a condition for lifting a trade and economic embargo that the Saudis and their allies have imposed on Qatar. Al Jazeera is headquartered in Qatar. We urge the U.S. State Department, which is attempting to mediate this regional dispute, to reject this outrageous demand, now confirmed by multiple news outlets.
