WWII Midway veteran recounts epic battle
Capt. John "Jack" Crawford, 98, a veteran of the Battle of Midway that turned the tide of World War II in the Pacific in favor of the U.S., recalled his role in the epic sea clash at an open meeting of NPC American Legion Post 20 on Thursday, July 13. Crawford was a Navy ensign when he reported for duty aboard the aircraft carrier Yorktown the night before the doomed ship sailed from Pearl Harbor in May, 1942 on a mission to intercept a powerful Japanese task force headed for the U.S. island of Midway. Amtrak CEO Charles Moorman defends against Trump’s proposed 13% transportation budget cuts
The Trump administration’s proposal to end all federal support for Amtrak’s long-distance rail service would be “extraordinarily problematic,” Amtrak CEO and President Charles Moorman said Wednesday at the National Press Club. President Donald Trump’s proposed budget would slash the federal transportation budget by 13% and completely eliminate all federal subsidies to Amtrak’s long-distance rail service. Reservations close Thursday, July 13, for the National Press Club’s annual Civil War trip to the Brandy Station, Va., battlefield. The trip will take place on Saturday, July 15.
