Don Larrabee, 1973 Club president and advocate for journalism, dies at 93
Donald R. Larrabee, National Press Club president in 1973 and a founding member of the board of the National Press Foundation in 1976, died July 18 at the Sunrise on Connecticut home in Washington. Larrabee, born in Portland, Maine, was a sergeant in an Army Air Corps public relations unit in the Philippines when Japan surrendered in August, 1945. David Hess, who served as president of the National Press Club in 1985, died July 19, 2017 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where he had moved to live near family after many decades in Washington, D.C. He was 83. Hess made his mark in Washington with his encyclopedic knowledge of Congress, his mentoring and encouragement of young reporters and his journalistic integrity. Born in Glendale, West Virginia, Hess served in Army intelligence during the Korean War. The National Press Club lost two of its former presidents within a day: Donald R. Larrabee, president in 1973, died July 18 at the Sunrise on Connecticut home in Washington; and David Hess, president in 1985, died July 19 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Larrabee, 93, had become increasingly frail and suffered memory loss, according to his daughter, Donna Palmer. Hess’s death was reported by his nephew, Darren Burnham, who said that Hess, 83, was in rehabilitation for a recent fall when he was stricken. He had previously suffered several strokes. Members' exhibit to feature electronic photo display, deadline: Aug. 11
This year's National Press Club members photo exhibit gives pro and amateur photographers a new way to show off their sparkling images with an electronic display online and at the exhibit itself. The electronic display joins the print exhibit that runs Aug. 31 to Sept. 29. Photos for both the print and electronic exhibits can be entered between July 31 and Aug. 11. Forty National Press Club members and guests got a close-up look at the historic site of two short but fierce battles near Culpeper, VA, during the Club’s 14th annual Civil War Trip. The trip, on on Saturday, July 15, was hosted by the Civil War Trust as part of a longstanding payment-in-kind agreement with the Club. With maps in hand, the NPC group spent the morning touring battlefields of the Battle of Cedar Mountain, which occurred on Aug. 9, 1862.
