Seventy-five years ago today, on May 8, 1945, President Harry Truman – just three weeks after taking office – announced to reporters that Germany had accepted unconditional surrender, ending hostilities in Europe. V-E Day was declared in front page banner headlines in the afternoon newspapers across the country.
