Want to test your spelling chops against members of Congress? There are open spots for the journalists' team at the National Press Club Politicians vs. Press Spelling Bee. Fred Ryan, publisher of The Washington Post, called for the immediate and safe release of freelance journalist Austin Tice at an Aug. 14 event at the National Press Club marking the sixth year since he was detained in Syria. “The work of Austin Tice reminds us of the importance, impact and yes dangers of great reporting,” Ryan said at the event, which was cosponsored by the Club and Reporters Without Borders. The Books & Brunch meeting scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 18 is cancelled. Craig Newmark, founder of the free classified ads site Craigslist, will speak at a National Press Club Headliners Luncheon Sept. 24 to discuss his philanthropic efforts to strengthen trust in news.
