Psychosocial counselor offers field guide for families, children coping with serious illness
Using her decades of experiences with very sick children and their families, author and psychosocial counselor Joanna Breyer brought her comprehensive field guide for helping families cope to a National Press Club Headliners Book Event on Tuesday. Club Vice President Alison Fitzgerald Kodjak, an NPR News health policy and economics correspondent, introduced Breyer and noted how much guidance exists “when you’re expecting a child but where does a parent turn for self-help when their biggest nightmare turns true?” Kodjak struck a personal note in her introduction, saying that Breyer’s daughter…

World War II Battle for Manila detailed at American Legion Post 20 meeting
James M. Scott, author of "Rampage," a stirring account of the 29-day battle for Manila in early 1945, told a Nov. 14 luncheon meeting of the National Press Club American Legion Post 20 that the U.S. Army realized it was occupying a crime scene once the fighting ended. Scott told of how Japanese Rear Adm. Sanji Iwabuchi surprised Gen. Douglas MacArthur when he refused to abandon the city to spare its destruction as MacArthur had done during his retreat to Bataan three years earlier. Iwabuchi's 17,000 soldiers battled surrounding U.S. forces in an urban bloodbath that destroyed much of the…

NASA scientists look to InSight landing on Mars for clues to planet’s past and our future
InSight, a NASA spacecraft scheduled to land on Mars Nov. 26, aims to answer “critical unknowns” about the Red Planet’s composition in preparation for human habitation, according to a science panel at a National Press Club Headliners event on Tuesday. “Mars rocks are time machines,” said Dr. James Garvin, chief scientist of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “As I tell my students, no rock has ever lied to me!” he said to laughter. One of four presenters at “Becoming Martians: NASA’s 25-year Plan for Humans to Inhabit the Planet,” Garvin invites us to imagine “Greenland-scale ice sheets,…

The National Press Club Journalism Institution and major news organizations have issued a joint statement condemning the White House for revoking CNN reporter Jim Acosta's White House credentials. Along with NPCJI, Associated Press, Bloomberg, First Look Media Works, Inc., FOX News,…

NPC members invited to attend free lunch to discuss local journalism and democracy, Nov. 29
Corporate decisions to slash newsroom budgets across the country are forcing new thinking about the viability of local journalism in America. Why does it matter? Because information is power, and an uninformed public is ill prepared to participate in a democracy. National Press Club member Sarah Pytalski of Burness Communications invites fellow Club members to attend a luncheon discussion to explore the unique value of local community journalism, its link to a vibrant democracy, and innovative solutions for fighting back against an agenda intent on starving the public of information. The…

NPC in History: Why a mug?
At the end of every National Press Club luncheon, the president presents the speaker with a “coveted National Press Club mug.” It’s been going on for as long as I have been a member, more than 33 years, and I gave out scores of them myself. But why a mug? I got an email last week from Club photographer Noel St. John with this question: Upon receiving the mug at a Club luncheon, Robert Wilkie, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, asked if the Club gave out more valuable gifts in the 1970s and 80s? St. John asked how long the Club had given out the mug. The tale there is about much more than just…
