Angelina Jolie, Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency, spoke about the more than 5,000 children who arrive in the United States each year unaccompanied by adults. These children, many victims of human trafficking, persecution, and other abuse, were alone in their attempts to navigate the complex refugee and immigration court system. Long-time National Press Club member Lillian Brown, who taught fledgling television news the importance of makeup and touched up the faces of every president from Dwight Eisenhower to Bill Clinton, was best known around the Club for putting the finishing touches on all of the guests on The Kalb Report for its first 15 seasons, beginning in 1994. The National Press Club will host a viewing party for the Presidential Debate on Tuesday, Sept. 29, starting at 8 p.m. in the Truman Lounge. The second panel of conference on "The Power and Influence of Arab Media" addressed the question of "Is Arab Media a Force for Reform, the Status Quo, or Extremism?" The panel was moderated by Ambassador Edmund Hull, Diplomat in Residence at the Woodrow Wilson School. Among the topics they addressed were the size and reach of media markets, news and entertainment programming on cultural issues, and the impact of new technology and media messages on social and political structures in the region.
