Political Independence for Tibet
The Dalai Lama, exiled leader of Tibet, spoke to a luncheon audience to call for political independence for Tibet, now officially recognized by the U.S. as a province of China. The Dalai Lama is in Washington to talk to the Clinton administration and members of Congress to discuss U.S.-China relations and appeal for recognition of Tibet. Following his prepared remarks, the Dalai Lama responded to questions from members of the audience.

Newsmakers are one hour news conferences that are run by the Club for the benefit of members and the press corps. Guests such as Members of Congress, key government officials, experts in policy, leaders of influential organizations and others agree to give a brief statement and to submit to questions from the press. This is a conventional news conference that is open to all credentialed press, members of the National Press Club and their guests. Past Luncheons
These events have created our global reputation as a great venue where news is made. The Luncheon speaker series allows a guest such as a head of state, politician, cabinet secretary, business leader, musician, actor, sports star or other interesting person to give a significant speech of good duration and then take questions from the press. The questions are written on cards and passed up to the President of the Press Club, who decides which ones will be asked and in what order. The entire program is one hour.
