Thomas Kemper, the general secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries, who was in Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport when terrorists attacked, killing 40, will share his deeply emotional experience of that event and the aftermath at a National Press Club Newsmaker news conference at 10 a.m. Fri., Aug. 19, in the club’s Murrow Room. NPC Luncheon with U.S. Senator Christopher Murphy
U.S. Sen. Christopher Murphy, the Connecticut Democrat who led a filibuster to force votes on gun control measures, will address the subject at a Club luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 8.Murphy spoke at the Democratic National Convention on the need for gun safety measures such as expanded background checks and a ban on gun sales to suspected terrorists.Both issues reached the Senate floor as part of a deal to end Murphy's filibuster, but were killed by Senate Republicans.Murphy's state is home to Newtown, where 20 Sandy Hook Elementary School students and six adults were gunned down in 2012. Telecommunications Act of 1996 Impact
Mr. Allen discussed the impact of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 one year after it became law. He stressed that although not much competition has yet arrived in local telephone markets, the act will be successful if the FCC can implement rules which promote competition. He also criticized local telephone monopolies which he argued are attempting to deny competition which will benefit consumers. After his prepared remarks, he took questions from the audience.
