Institute launches 'Class of 2020' to spotlight the next generation of journalists
The National Press Club Journalism Institute begins spotlighting the next generation of journalists this week in its Covering Coronavirus newsletter and on its website. These journalism students are graduating from college or Master’s programs this spring into an extremely challenging job market, complicated by widespread work-from-home newsrooms that are shrinking faster than ever. The goal of the new program is to help these students meet future bosses and colleagues, who will reach out and support them in building journalism’s future together. Inspired by Jill Geisler’s column advising…

He writes of losing his mother and caring for his ailing father in this pandemic: “I need to write things down to discover my emotions, things about myself, and how I’m relating to the people I love.” Introducing the webinar, “Writing through: Grieving together,…

National Press Club and Journalism Institute support VOA and its journalism
The National Press Club and the National Press Club Journalism Institute stand with Voice of America and its director, Amanda Bennett, against unsupported criticism by the White House of its coronavirus coverage. Bennett is a highly respected journalist who has been a staunch advocate of the independence guaranteed in The VOA Charter signed by President Gerald R. Ford in 1976. To claim, as the White House has done, that VOA has been reporting Chinese propaganda flies in the face of the facts. VOA has reported on the Chinese undercount of coronavirus deaths in the city of Wuhan, reported on …

Try an easy spinach souffle for a light lunch or side dish
The very word “soufflé” make eyes glaze over and may cause some to pass on this recipe. But take heart, this is not the soufflé of Grand French cooking lore. This is a baked spinach laughably easy but delicious. This would make a light lunch. It is a mainstay at many festive gatherings. The start here is with frozen spinach. If using fresh spinach, pile it in a colander after cleaning, sprinkle some salt and pour boiling water over to wilt it and extract some of the inherent water in the leaves. Also, a word about nutmeg: this is a spice not often used in a savory dish, but it pairs well…

Nationals' radio broadcasters link up for ‘Virtual Opening Day’
If in February, you had asked Washington Nationals radio broadcasters Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler what they were going to be doing on April 14, their answer would have been to be broadcasting the game between the World Series champions and the Mariners from Seattle. Instead, Slowes and Jageler were each home with headsets on while National Press Club President Michael Freedman interviewed them via video link in an event billed as “Virtual Opening Day." Washington Nationals radio broadcasters Charlie Slowes (middle) and Dave Jageler (right) joined National Press Club President for…

Deadline in journalism contest extended to June 30
The deadline for the National Press Club journalism contest has been extended from April 15 to June 30 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Thanks to those who have sent in entries, but the virus outbreak has had the dual effect of holding down entries and interfering with the Club's abilities to help promote it enough. While there have certainly been some strong entries, there are not enough to properly judge the contest in these unusual times. Remember that the contest is looking for the best journalism from 2019 in areas like politics, breaking news, broadcast news, consumer news, foreign…

Update-1: Coronavirus poses new challenges for reporters, news organizations
Timely and reliable news reporting is more important than ever now as the coronavirus pandemic spreads rapidly across the world. The challenge is a daunting one for journalists faced not only with the task of sorting through complicated and often contradictory information but also with the risk of contracting COVID-19, the infectious disease caused by the new virus. And even as people turn to the news media for information on the crisis, many U.S. newspapers are letting go of reporters and editors as advertising all but disappears. Jon Alsop In an Update-1 podcast, National Press Club…

Tribute to a great war correspondent on the 75th anniversary of his death
Ernie Pyle (center with goggles) and a crew from the US Army’s 191st Tank Battalion at the Anzio Beachhead in 1944 Photo: US Army combat photographer – U.S. Army Center of Military History As his fleet tug steamed by le Shima Island off Okinawa in the Pacific near the end of World War II, my father wrote in his journal, “where Ernie Pyle was killed.” That was just one tiny indication of how revered this Scripps-Howard war correspondent was at the time he was killed 75 years ago April 18 by a Japanese machine gunner on this island. Many journalists are admired for the work they have done,…
