Databases 101
Databases 101 will be taught by David Donald, data editor at the Center for Public Integrity, who has taught journalists all over the country how to extract great stories from piles of data. David's database class will show how to use databases to make connections in databases where the secrets of governments, companies and candidates are hidden. Such connections – "mash-ups" if you will – are difficult if not impossible with spreadsheets, and learning a database program such as Access will open possibilities for your data-driven stories. Spreadsheets 101
Spreadsheets 101 will demonstrate how Excel and other programs can be powerful tools for putting yourself in charge of your data, following the campaign money and holding accountable the officials who spend our tax dollars. Spreadsheets 101 will help orient reporters with basic and powerful features of Excel that make data analysis a snap, including importing, formatting and sorting. The class will be taught by JoElla Straley from NPR's research library. The class will run from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon in the Bloomberg Room.

PBS documentary screening of "Reportero"
The Club's Freedom of the Press Committee, along with Reporters Without Borders, is hosting a screening of a new PBS documentary, Reportero by Bernardo Ruiz. The documentary looks at the risks of investigative journalism in Mexico. The film follows a veteran reporter and his colleagues at Zeta, the Tijuana-based independent newsweekly, as they ply their trade in one of the deadliest places in the world for members of the media.
