Author lauds character traits of familiar American historical figures
An interior moral compass guided some of America's most important leaders. That's the lesson found in "Profiles in Character: Sixteen Americans and the Traits that Defined Them." The author, Dr. Jennifer London, wrote the book with her late husband, Dr. J. Phillip "Jack" London, a Navy veteran who went on to lead CACI International, a major defense contractor. The Club is once again hosting an evening of music with Blues Alley, Georgetown’s home for jazz for an evening of great music, and this year there's a literary twist. Larry Tye will be on hand to discuss his new book The Jazzmen: How Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Count Basie Transformed America. It looks mainly at those maestroes' lives off their bandstands, and how they set the table for the civil rights revolution. Books will be available for purchase at the event. Club American Legion Post 20 has visit to Cold War Museum in Va. in June before taking summer break
Having met May 8, the National Press Club American Legion Post 20 will now take a break from its monthly lunch-time meetings at the Club for the summer, and hold its next meeting in September. But there will be a field trip on Friday, June 21, to Vint Hill, Virginia, near Warrenton, to tour the Cold War Museum at noon and later take in a wine tasting nearby, which will include a presentation on the history of Vint Hill Farms Station, a military listening post from World War II through the Cold War. The National Press Club and The Associated Press invite you to join in celebrating the life of our beloved friend and colleague Will Lester at a memorial event being held at 6 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, May 15, in the conference rooms at the Club. The event is open to members and friends of Lester, a longtime Press Club member who served as chair of the Awards Team for many years. Lester died unexpectedly in February.
